CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

At half past midnight Teddy parked his car in front of an abandoned warehouse near the East River. He glanced out at the seven other cars parked there with a grimace. As uninviting as the docks in Brooklyn appeared, they remained a hotbed for illegal activity during the late hours of the night. Teddy was unsure of what was coming next. When his feet hit the gravel, his body tensed up. He moved at a turtle’s pace until he entered the building. Peeking inside, he saw that it was dark, shabby, and dreary. With the only source of light coming from the moon and streetlights, it was a strain to see anything clearly.

Within a few steps, Teddy stopped dead in his tracks when he saw two guys far off in the corner smoking cigars. Once he realized who they were, he strolled over to them. As he passed each wide cement pillar, he noticed silhouettes of men stationed with guns already drawn. He counted ten in all. Teddy acted unbothered by the menace, even though he was ready to piss in his pants.

“John,” he said, smiling as he approached the two cigar smokers.

“I don’t know what you’re smiling about,” John said as he removed the cigar from his mouth. “The deal is still not done.”

John Lincoln was a tall, fit white man in his mid-forties. To all who knew him, he was a pompous asshole. His family at one time did have millions, but now he was just one of the working-class rich people trying to reclaim their empire. He spoke with a bit of a British accent and thought he was better than everyone. He almost always wore a houndstooth jacket and a derby to boot. Yet he was from Connecticut and only had been to England a few times. The act did work in many affluent circles. Many people trusted his word based on how he talked and dressed. Teddy was one of them.

“Tomorrow is a whole new day,” Teddy announced. “I will be the new CEO and my first order of business is to sell the company to the highest bidder.”

John rose to his feet. “So, you’re trying to cut me out?”

“Don’t be moronic. We have a deal. Rest assured, we will all get our deserved cuts.” Teddy rolled his eyes. “For someone so wealthy, you are very barbaric in your thinking. Look around—could I really double-cross you?”

“I have little patience for your American ways. If you decide to screw me, then you will definitely get screwed.”

“What are you going to do? Sew my ass to my face?” Teddy chuckled.

“That would keep you from talking so much,” John said scornfully as his bodyguard gripped his gun.

“Just remember, I want my half a billion dollars wired the minute you are officially the new majority owner, and I will then take my place as the minority owner with options.”

“Very minority. Like a white man in Nigeria,” John said, low enough not to be heard by Teddy. “Don’t forget about Jaymee Dean.
